Description

Hello!

This is my first Pencil Assignment for The Art Academy

:icontheartacademy:

I am in the Alces clan.

To the teacher:

I go by either Gilan or Marzipan. Either name is fine.
I have been drawing on and off for a few years but I have only recently been trying to draw regularly, for the past few months. As i do not normally use pens for drawing I would like to improve and then try to perfect my pencil skills before I move on to pen.

As such I chose to do the assignment in pencil.

I think my weak points when it comes to pencil sketching is realism. I can't seem to get the picture to look natural and all my drawings always seem to have a cartoonish element to them. Things like folds and skin shadows I haven't really drawn that many times before. I would like to improve on this and on my drawing techniques overall.

The reference picture I used was : [link]

Hello, student! :giggle:

So I'm here to give you feedback on your assignment and give you your grade/score.

For the most part I was disappointed in the three submitted assignments in that none of you truly did what I asked for. What the assignment asked for was for you to focus on the "intense shadows" found in your highly contrasted photograph. The three submitted assignments focused little on those shadows and looked like regular portrait drawings. Again, the example piece I gave was this [link] ... very geometrical, yet realistic, and still focusing a lot on the intense dark shadows.

Anywho onto the scoring ...

Completing the assignment correctly / on time: 2 out of 3

Though the assignment was completed on time, it did not follow the directions of the assignment. You followed the directions more than others but it still failed to truly focus on the shadows.

Improvement: 2 out of 4

Seeing as I don't have any artwork to compare this piece with, I can't really judge on improvement yet.

Overall quality: 1 out of 3

This is not a bad start. The lines are still a tad scratchy and I do agree with you on the note that it looks a bit "cartoon-like." To fix that you just need practice ... realistic portraits are hard to accomplish!

Good job! On a final note, what I can recommend for the future is to print out your reference photo, draw a grid onto the photo and onto your paper, and use that method for making sure everything in your portrait aligns correctly. :D
